2014 Holiday Flavors: Mains, Sides and Salads
Jim Hendricks
ALBANY — Nothing says the holidays like the great aromas that waft from Southwest Georgia kitchens as family, friends and acquaintances gather for everything from a formal sit-down Thanksgiving meal to a table of hors d’oeuvres at informal events.
It’s also a time when recipes — handed down from previous generations, found in a newspaper or magazine, or recently created — are brushed off and the stove and oven get a series of workouts. The nights get longer, the air gets cooler and comforting flavors of the holidays are everywhere.
Several weeks ago, we asked Albany Herald readers to send in some of their favorites for a special Holiday Flavors edition of our feature SouthView sections. More than four dozen were submitted.
Today, we’re including main dishes, sides and salads from readers. On Wednesday, we plan to devote the section to a holiday-time favorite — dessert. And a little later, we’ll take some of the recipes that seem to fit in well with parties and informal gatherings.
We hope you see recipes that interest you and that they’ll add to your holiday enjoyment this year. By the way, we’re planning to do Holiday Flavors again next November, so if you make one of your own special treats that you’d like to share, take a photo of it and be sure to get yours in for the 2015 edition of Holiday Flavors.
Also, a tip of the hat to Herald librarian/staff writer Mary Braswell for typing most of these recipes.
