ALBANY — The Dougherty County Grand Jury on Wednesday returned a true bill indictment of malice murder and aggravated assault against Susan Embert for the death of her husband, William “Jake” Embert, last June 28.

According to Dougherty County District Attorney Greg Edwards, Jake Embert’s death was initially ruled a suicide. William Embert’s family, however, refused to accept the judgment and hired a private investigator to gather further evidence, he said, and the cause of death has been changed to homicide.

“The family continued to insist that (Jake) Embert would not have committed suicide, they sought other avenues,” Edwards said, “and when our office began to see the additional evidence, we entered into the investigation as well.”

Edwards said he and his office believe there was a “clear motive” for William Embert’s slaying, but decline to elaborate.

Susan Embert was residing in Milton, Fla., Edwards said. She was arrested and taken to the Santa Rosa County jail, where she awaits extradition to Dougherty County, the prosecutor said.
