The Sports Xchange
BOSTON — Wake Forest survived a wild finish and pulled out a 3-0 Atlantic Coast Conference victory over Boston College in a defensive struggle on Saturday.
The game ended with Boston College unable to get a play off at the Wake Forest 1-yard line, the Eagles attempting to spike the ball but doing it a fraction of a second too late.
There was a review and the game was declared over.
Running back Tyler Rouse had run into the line on a play that started with 14 seconds left. Boston College had no timeouts and then ran out of time.
Wake Forest (3-3, 1-2 in the ACC) seemingly had the game wrapped up when BC quarterback Troy Flutie fumbled on a quarterback sneak with 2:12 left in the game.
But Wake Forest running back Matt Colburn fumbled the ball back to the Eagles at the 11-yard line with 56 seconds remaining.
Freshman quarterback Jeff Smith ran the ball down to the one to set up the crazy finish.
Mike Weaver kicked a 25-yard third-quarter field goal for the only points, after a fumble by freshman running back Jordin Gowins at his own 4-yard-line.
BC freshman kicker Colton Lichtenberg, who missed a late field that left his team with a 9-7 loss at Duke the previous week, missed from 31 and 26 yards — one in each half — to keep the Eagles scoreless.
Duke 44, Army 3
Junior running back Jela Duncan and sophomore quarterback Parker Boehme rushed for two touchdowns apiece as Duke rolled to a nonconference victory over Army at West Point, N.Y.
Junior quarterback Thomas Sirk passed for 197 yards and one touchdown as the Blue Devils (5-1) won their third straight game. Senior safety Jeremy Cash had two tackles for loss and recovered a fumble to thwart Army’s best opportunity for a touchdown and Duke limited the Black Knights to 168 offensive yards.
Pittsburgh 26, Virginia 19
Junior quarterback Nate Peterman passed for 222 yards and two touchdowns as Pittsburgh beat Virginia in ACC play at Pittsburgh.
Junior receiver Tyler Boyd and junior tight end Scott Orndoff had touchdown receptions for the Panthers (4-1, 2-0). Redshirt freshman Qadree Ollison rushed for a touchdown and sophomore running back Chris James gained 94 yards on 11 rushes.
Junior quarterback Matt Johns was 17 of 33 passing for 209 yards, one touchdown and one interception for the Cavaliers (1-4, 0-1). Virginia allowed four sacks, including one for a key safety.
South Florida 45,
Syracuse 24
Tailback Marlon Mack ran for a season-high 179 yards and two touchdowns as USF snapped a three-game losing streak with a victory over Syracuse in Tampa, Fla.
Quarterback Quinton Flowers finished 15 of 22 for 259 yards and two touchdowns and added 55 yards and a touchdown on the ground for the Bulls (2-3), who notched their first homecoming win in the last six seasons. USF also received 81 yards and a touchdown on three receptions from wide receiver Ryeshene Bronson.
Quarterback Eric Dungey finished 21 of 34 for 232 yards and a pair of touchdowns and also ran for a team-high 31 yards and a score for Syracuse (3-2), which lost its second straight after a 3-0 start. Dungey also threw an interception for the Orange, who received 21 rushing yards and a team-most 75 receiving yards from tailback Ervin Philips.
After leading 10-3 at the half, the Bulls scored on a Mack 25-yard run and a 42-yard pass from Flowers to Bronson on their first two second-half possessions.
