East Broad Avenue closed to allow underpass improvements

ALBANY _ East Broad Avenue from Church Street to Broadway Street has been closed until May 29 to allow improvements to the underpass area.

K. Bruce Maples, city of Albany engineer, said both the roadway and sidewalks will be closed to prevent access to the area by the public. A detour route has been delineated with signage using the established truck route in the vicinity which includes Merritt Street, Oak Street, Bonnyview Avenue and Broadway Street.

Maples said motorists and pedestrians should follow the designated detour route and be alert to changing conditions over the next four to five weeks.

Georgia’s First Lady to visit several Dougherty schools

ALBANY — Georgia’s First Lady, Sandra Deal, will visit Albany on Monday, May 4, to help celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week.

School spokesperson R.D. Harter says Deal will be visiting several schools between 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on May 4. Schools on the visitation list include Albany High School, Merry Acres Middle School, Lake Park Elementary School, Robert Cross Middle School and West Town Elementary School.

ASU Plans spring commencement services

ALBANY — Albany State University will award bachelor’s, master’s and specialist degrees to an estimated 350 students at the spring 2015 commencement program at 9:45 a.m. on Saturday, May 9 at Albany Civic Center.

U.S. Congressman Sanford D. Bishop is the keynote speaker. In addition to the graduating class, this spring’s activities include a commissioning for graduates of the ASU Military Science program.

The Albany State University Class of 1965 will also celebrate its 50th-year reunion on Friday, May 8. Also, planned for Friday are the Department of Nursing and Health and Human Performance Nursing Pinning Ceremony and the College of Education PENning Ceremony.

Troy University’s Albany campus sets open house Wednesday

ALBANY — Troy University’s Albany location will host an Open House and Career Chat on Wednesday as a part of a global event to assist prospective students in the areas of admissions and academic strategy for career development.

During the event, expert advisers will be on hand to help prospective students decide on a major, and answer questions about financial aid or credit transfers.

The event at the Albany site, located at 321 William Jr. St., will run from 9 a.m until 6 p.m. and will provide information for attendees on Financial Aid and Admissions processes as well as information about in-class and online opportunities for pursuing your degree.

Application fees will be waived for those who apply for admission to Troy during this event at the Albany site or online on April 29.

Keith Gaines, Albany Area Coordinator for Troy University’s Global Campus, encourages adults who are thinking about returning to college to begin or to complete a degree program to take advantage of this opportunity. Says Gaines, “This is a no-risk opportunity for you to explore the possibilities and get started on your way to that degree you’ve always needed.”
