ALBANY — Albany and Dougherty County law enforcement will encircle the Krispy Kreme at 400 N. Slappey Blvd. today and Saturday, to “raise some dough” for the Atlanta-based Special Olympics Georgia.

Officials say the Dougherty 10th annual Cops On Doughnut Shops is part of a statewide effort to provide intellectually challenged children and adults year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports.

Event coordinator Marie Ostrander said volunteers from the Albany and Dougherty police departments and the Dougherty Sheriff’s Office will be on premises both days from 7 a.m. through 10 p.m., accepting donations and offering some sweet doughnut deals from partner Krispy Kreme.

“Treats for those who donate to the cause will range from a free original glazed doughnut, to a complimentary doughnut party for gifts of $1,000 or more,” Ostrander said.

Many of the volunteers and Krispy Kreme employees will be dressed in Special Olympics Georgia t-shirts and hats, Ostrander said, which, along with the doughy “circles of temptation,” will be offered for sale.’

“We have fun doing this every year,” Ostrander said, “We’ll have a tent and patrol cars in the parking lot. We carry signs and wave at passers-by. Anything to draw attention. I think the customers have fun, too.”

According to Ostrander, in some Georgia cities the cops actually stand on the roofs of their their local Krispy Kremes — as the name of the event implies.

“For certain good reasons, we don’t do that in Albany,” Ostrander said. “Mostly we keep to the parking lot.”

Ostrander said last year’s Cops On Doughnut Shops here raised $13,174, with a more ambitious goal this year of $15,000.

“A lot of the money raised by law enforcement goes toward uniforms, coaches, travel and other expenses,” Ostrander said, “So the athletes won’t face a financial burden to attend the events.”

Officials say the next big Special Olympics Georgia event will be the Summer Olympic Games, May 39 – 31 at Emory University in Atlanta.
