ALBANY – Albany city officials confirmed on Monday afternoon that a body found in the Flint River was that of a 23-year-old man who went into the water a week earlier, bringing an end to search and recovery efforts.

Dougherty County Coroner and Albany Fire Department personnel recovered the body of Cameron Jones at about 4 p.m. after searchers noticed it in a pile of brush in the river about two and a half hours earlier.

“Our heart aches for the family and friends of Mr. Jones as they try and grapple with this devastating loss,” Albany City Manager Steven Carter said during a news conference held at 5 p.m.

Jones’ body was found the day after rescue and recovery workers located the body of city employee Darrious Stephens, who disappeared three weeks earlier. Stephens, a city Public Works Department employee, went into the river while collecting water samples.

The search for Jones resumed at 9 a.m. on Monday morning, with Fire Department workers concentrating south of the Radium Springs boat landing, Albany Fire Chief Cedric Scott said. That was where they ultimately recovered his body.

“Our goal was to make sure we got these loved ones back to them (families),” Fowler said. “Perhaps now they can begin to heal now that their loved one has been recovered.”
