Albany first responders meet for barbecue challenge

ALBANY — Area public safety teams will have a chance to out-barbecue each other during the annual Sonny’s BBQ First Responders BBQ Challenge on Saturday.
David Milliner with Sonny’s BBQ said he started the event last year as a way of saying thank you to public servants.
As of Friday, five barbecue teams were registered for the event, Milliner said, for a chance at trophies and prizes up to $300 cash. For an entrance fee of $50, teams may compete in any or all categories, including beef, poultry, pork or ribs.
“Whether it’s EMS, firefighters, military, law enforcement or any of the others, we really can’t thank them enough,” Milliner said. “There really is a need for this, and what better way to honor them than with barbecue?”
Milliner said the event takes place from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Sonny’s BBQ, 1900 N. Slappey Blvd., and is free the public.
