ALBANY — As one of the most technologically advanced schools in the Dougherty County School System. it should come as no surprise that Albany Middle School has been selected as the ELS (Educational Learning Systems) School of the Month for March.

In a presentation at the school on Thursday, ELS President Ken Hodges cited an uptick in Albany Middle number of words read by its students as the reason for the recognition.

In February, Albany Middle was the first school in the DCSS to received computer tablets as the district begins to implement its One-to-One Technology initiative. That program is on going and will put a computer tablet into that hands of each of the system’s 15,000 plus students by the end of the 2015-16 school year.

“This software is designed to help students learn to use technology to catch up on reading and math,” Hodges said. “It can also be used on either desktops or tablets.”

Albany Middle reading teacher Quantrisha Reid said she is pleased with the technology.

“The software is great,” Reid said. “We’ve noticed improvement in reading comprehension and vocabulary. The system also us to track a student’s progress which lets up set goals for each individual child.”

Educational Learning Systems, Inc. is a 29-year-old Florida-based corporation serving school systems in Florida and Georgia. ELS has as its mission to help school systems achieve positive change in their instructional programs through the effective use of technology.
