ALBANY — With the Albany State University homecoming activities under way, officials of the Albany Police Department have issued some tips and guidelines for spectators to stay safe, especially during the homecoming parade at 9 a.m. Saturday.

“Pine Avenue will be shut down around 6 a.m.,” said Sgt. William Dowdell with the Traffic Unit of the APD. “If you don’t have need to travel there, you won’t be allowed in.”

As always, spectators should expect large crowds at the downtown parade. Dowdell said it’s best to allow plenty of time to arrive to avoid problems.

“We want everybody to come as a family and leave as a family,” Dowdell said. “Keep small children close, and know exactly what they’re wearing in case they become separated. That way you can alert any of the many officers you’ll see at the parade.”

Dowdell said the best way to protect valuables in a car is to lock them in the trunk or keep them covered inside the car and be certain the doors are locked.

“These are crimes of opportunity,” Dowdell said. “If you leave something there for them, you really can’t expect it to be there when you get back.”

The same goes for valuables outside your vehicle, Dowdell said. When making a purchase, be sure not to “flash” your valuables or wads of cash. Someone might be watching and try to take it from you later, he said.

For those who will enjoy festivities throughout the day, Dowdell advises the “buddy system,” walking or travelling in pairs or groups. If someone remains at home, let them know where you’re going and when you expect to be back.

“If you’re careful of your valuables, be mindful where you are and use the buddy system, you truly have nothing to worry about,” Dowdell said.
