ALBANY — The Albany Police Department responded to a least three assault calls Tuesday, beginning with an armed robbery of two residents in their backyard.

Victims Errol Baylis, 44, and Moses Lewis, 64, told officers that around 1 a.m. they were in the backyard of a residence on the 1200 block of Avalon Avenue when two men armed with handguns robbed them of an undisclosed amount of cash. No descriptions of the robbers was given, officials say, and the investigation is ongoing.

In a second and unrelated incident taking place at Club Legend, 725 E. Broad Ave., a witness told police that around 1:30 a.m., Jermaine Nixon, 31, bumped into Joseph Nelson Thompson, 30, prompting Thompson to attack Nixon with a box cutter and give Nixon multiple lacerations. Officials said Thompson was charged with aggravated assault and taken to the Dougherty County Jail, where he was discovered also to have an outstanding warrant for contempt of court. According to jail officials, Thompson’s bond for the two charges is set at $16,600.

In a third unrelated case on the 2500 block of South Jackson Street, Africa Jones, 34, told police she was awakened around 3 a.m. by her boyfriend, who she said was choking her. In her statement to police, Jones said she lost consciousness from the choking and, after she regained consciousness, her boyfriend struck her on her head with a radio, threatened to kill her, then left with her cell phone.

There are no known witnesses to the incident, officials say, and the investigation is ongoing.
