ALBANY – Two Albany high school students won top honors in a statewide art competition that featured hundreds of contestants competing from all over Georgia.
Benjamin Wright Jr. of Monroe High School won first place, and Brilynn Bowling of Westover High School won second place in the high school division of the competition.
Wright and Bowling will receive their awards in separate ceremonies at their respective schools in celebration of Law Day, which will be recognized on Wednesday.
Students and teachers from around the state participated in this year’s statewide Judicial Council of Georgia’s Law Day Art Contest.
The entries captured the essence of the importance of having a voice in a democratic society, free speech, voting, and the diversity of this country, which is part of its strength. The entries, initially voted on by Judicial Council staff, were narrowed to 25 entries, and then the judges of the Judicial Council voted to narrow the finalists to 12, and selected the top three winners.
In 2020 the Judicial Council of Georgia created the statewide art contest to celebrate Law Day in response to a call to action from Chief Justice John Roberts of the U.S. Supreme Court to judges across the country to assist in promoting civic education and explaining government to their citizens.
Georgia social studies and art teachers were asked to make the contest a part of their teaching curriculum.
The Judicial Council of Georgia votes on policy and budget decisions for Georgia’s judiciary and is made up of 28 judges from across the state. Dougherty County Probate Court Judge Leisa Blount will deliver the awards to the local winners on behalf of the Law Day Art Contest committee.
