Albany Tech to enforce dress code

ALBANY — Students at Albany Technical will begin having to dress more appropriately and professionally as school officials have begun strictly enforcing the school’s dress code.

The school, which has had a dress code policy in its student handbook for some time, has posted fliers on campus letting students know that items such as mini-skirts, saggy pants and halter tops are not proper attire.

“We’re seeing more and more students dressing, mostly indecently,” said Wendy Howell, director of public relations and information for the school. “It’s just not appropriate dress for a workforce development college.”

School officials feel enforcing the dress code is simply another way to get students prepared for how to dress in a professional setting once they enter the workforce.

According to the 2013-14 student handbook, students should “dress according to the requirements of the work for which they are being trained.”

The handbook continues by saying students should not “dress, groom, wear, or use emblems, insignia, badges or other symbols or lewd or vulgar words where the effect thereof is offensive to a reasonable person.”

Other types of dress not permitted on campus include, tank tops, swimsuits, short skirts or dresses, pants worn below the waste and midriff tops.

“As far as I know, at least since I’ve been at Albany Tech, there has been a dress code,” Howell said. “It just has not been enforced.”
