PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — Ricky Smallridge of Auburn, Ala., and Albany golf pro Sonny Skinner of Sylvester, held their lead through the third round Wednesday in the 52nd annual TaylorMade-adidas Golf PGA Senior-Junior Team Championship.
The halfway leaders Tuesday, Smallridge and Skinner added an 11 under par 61, four-ball stroke play (better ball), on the Wanamaker Course at The PGA Golf Club. At 30 under 186, they lead by one stroke heading into the final round today.
“It’s the first time we’ve played together in competition but we’ve known each other since junior golf,” said Skinner, 49, a teaching professional at River Pointe Golf Club. “We play a lot alike, keeping the ball in play, hitting a lot of greens. We know each other’s clubs and we’ve had two looks at a lot of birdies this week.”
Smallridge, 51, head professional at the Auburn University Golf Club, birdied the first two holes, Skinner the next three and saved par from 10 feet at the sixth. “It was very comfortable to get off to such a nice start,” Skinner added. Overall, Smallridge had four birdies and Skinner made seven.
Smallridge and Skinner didn’t bogey a single hole.
The winners will split $10,000 from the $110,000 purse. It’s the first time in the 57-year history of the PGA Winter Championships that prize money has reached $100,000 for a tournament.
