ATLANTA (AP) — Officials say the new Atlanta streetcar is expected to open just before the end of the year.

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed said in a statement Tuesday that the streetcar is expected to open for passenger service Dec. 30. Reed says passengers are invited to ride for free for the first three months of service.

Reed says the streetcar’s 2.7-mile route will connect neighbors to several downtown tourist attractions, museums and entertainment venues. The route includes 12 stops.

The grand opening celebration is scheduled for 11 a.m. Dec. 30 at the Woodruff Park Streetcar stop.
