AuBre’ Ana Moore helps Westover Lady Patriots slip past Terrell County

ALBANY — AuBre’Ana Moore scored 25 points, including a free throw down the stretch that proved to be the difference, to lead the Westover Lady Patriots to a 53-52 victory over Terrell County Tuesday night in a nonregion game.
Both teams were evenly matched through the first few minutes of the game with Westover owning a 6-5 lead. Terrell County’s Timya Harvey hit a 3-pointer to give the Lady Greenwaves a 10-8 lead, but the Patriots Kayla Howard responded with a basket to tie the game at 10. Brittany Williams scored a basket and a free throw to give Terrell County a 13-10 lead by the end of the quarter. The Lady Greenwaves played tenacious defense, forcing Westover into some turnovers.
Moore drilled a 3-pointer to start the second quarter, tying the score at 13. Both teams matched baskets for the first minute and a half of the second, with Terrell County grabbing a one-point advantage at 19-18.
Jamya McDaniel scored 11 points for the Greenwaves in the first half, but Moore was able to lead Westover with 13 first half points of her own, and both teams went to the locker room at halftime with Terrell County up 29-27.
Both teams resumed their tight battle in the third quarter. Terrell County was up 33-32 before Jamiya McDaniel hit a 3-pointer to extend the Lady Greenwaves lead to four. However, The Lady Patriots went on a 6-3 run before Terrell County retook the lead 39-38 on a basket by Ticobia Whiting.
Howard gave Westover a 41-39 lead when she scored, was fouled and made the free throw. But Terrell County scored a basket to end the quarter to tie the game.
As was true in the first three quarters, both teams kept it close early in the fourth with Terrell County owning a 45-44 lead before Westover coach Lewis Smith called a time out with 6:09 to go.
Terrell County increased their lead to 49-46 with 4:09 to go. Then Westover took the lead on baskets by Howard and Tiana Campbell with 3:13 to go before Terrell County coach Tammye Jenkins Ware called a time out.
With Westover leading 52-50 and roughly two minutes to go, the Lady Patriots moved the ball around the perimeter without taking a shot to run clock, but Terrell County forced a turnover and scored to tie the game with under a minute left.
Westover’s Tamiyah Dice was fouled and made one of two free throws to give the Lady Patriots a 53-52 lead. Terrell County had a chance to score with 18 seconds left, but Timerius Whiting’s shot failed and Westover won the jump ball. The Lady Greenwaves had one last shot at the buzzer, but it too failed and Westover escaped with a victory.
Jamya McDaniel led the Lady Greenwaves with 15 points, while Jamiel McDaniel added 13.
WESTOVER BOYS 72, TERRELL COUNTY 63: On the strength of 25 points from Jordan Floyd and 24 from Andre Kennedy, the Westover Patriots came away with a hard-fought 72-63 win over Terrell County.
The first quarter was hotly contested with both teams tied nine. From then on, Westover went on 12-2 run to close out the first quarter with a 21-11 lead.
The Greenwaves cut the lead to 24-20 in the second quarter on a 3-pointer by Jaamal Thompson. Thompson hit another trey to cut the Patriots’ lead to 26-25 with just under three minutes to go in the half.
However, Kennedy scored, was fouled and completed the 3-point play to give the Patriots a 31-27 lead. Thompson hit another three to keep the Greenwaves within three at 33-30. Westover closed out the first half with Rashaan Mathis hitting one of two free throws, giving Westover a 34-32 halftime lead.
Westover started the second half with a 3-pointer by Floyd. Floyd was fouled on the shot and sank the free throw, completing the four-point play. Floyd scored five more points, including another 3-pointer, to increase Westover’s lead to 44-38 midway through the third quarter.
With 28 seconds left, Terrell County’s Montaio Dunning hit a 3-pointer to cut the Patriots’ lead to 53-50, but Kennedy scored and completed a 3-point play. The third quarter ended with Westover up 56-51.
Both teams came out ragged to start the fourth quarter, committing turnovers. Only one basket was scored between the two teams in the first two and a half minutes, and it was by Terrell County.
Then Detravion Bishop scored on a slam dunk to cut Westover’s lead to 56-55 with five minutes to go in the game. Then Westover went on an 8-0 run before Dentravious Huckaby drove through the lane and scored, cutting the Patriots lead to 63-57.
Floyd hit another 3-pointer to extend Westover’s lead to eight. Terrell County was able to cut the lead to six, but that was as close as they would get in the last minute as Westover went on to win.
Bishop led the Greenwaves in scoring with 19 points, while Thompson chipped in 14 in a losing cause.
