Bainbridge to dedicate World War II hangar

BAINBRIDGE — Decatur County officials will be on hand Saturday to dedicate a historic World War II hangar in honor of the soldiers who fought for America’s freedom.
Beginning at 11 a.m., Decatur County commissioners, public officials, the Decatur County Historical Society, the Decatur County Airport Committee and the public will gather at the hangar for a ceremony commemorating its recent renovation. The hangar is located at 413 4th Ramp, Decatur County Industrial Park off U.S. Highway 27.
In January 1942, Gen. Hap Arnold, commander of the Army Air Force, sent a memorandum to President Franklin Roosevelt outlining the need to create “the mightiest air force the world has ever seen.” To support the increase in training, a new basic school was built in Bainbridge.
With the longtime protection and support of several civic-minded individuals, the 1942 hangar has been preserved from destruction many times. Saturday’s ceremony will give attendees an opportunity to view the hangar as many young men as they prepared to fight for the allies during World War II.
In addition, planes delivered to the site for use in training has been restored, and will be available for viewing as well as other planes from the era.
