NEWTON — A high school girl was raped in the media center of the Baker County K-12 School in Newton Monday, said a Georgia Bureau of Investigation official.

“We took Jeremy Hawkins, 19, and a 15-year-old juvenile into custody,” said Mike Lewis, GBI special agent in charge. “They are charged with statutory rape and aggravated child molestation.”

Hawkins was taken to Baker County Jail and the juvenile was placed in a juvenile detention center, Lewis said.

The alleged rapists attacked the girl after she was let out of a classroom by her teacher to find another student, Lewis said. Because she is a juvenile and the nature of the crime, Lewis did not release the girl’s name or any other information.

Citing policy, Tommy Rogers, Baker County School System superintendent, declined to comment.
