ATLANTA — As many as 21 Georgia counties and the municipalities located within their boundaries face an uncertain economic future after the Georgia Supreme Court ruled Monday that courts cannot settle disputes over the distribution of local-option sales tax revenues collected in the counties.

1. Two Southwest Georgia physicians featured in Georgia Trend ‘40 Under 40’

ALBANY — The October 2013 edition of “Georgia Trend” has been released with this year’s “40 Under 40” selections which include two physicians from Southwest Georgia. Jocelyn Rogers, M.D., an obstetrician and gynecologist at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus, and Kiyoshi Yamazaki, M.D., a sports medicine specialist based in Albany, were named in this year’s “40 Under 40” selection.

1. Woman charged with shooting son-in-law at funeral

AMERICUS — A Sumter County woman faces several charges after apparently shooting her son-in-law Wednesday afternoon while the victim was attending his mother’s funeral services, Sumter County Sheriff’s deputies report.

1. MCLB workers back on base

MCLB-ALBANY — Following Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel’s announcement over the weekend that “most (Department of Defense) civilians placed on emergency furlough Oct. 1 during the ongoing government shutdown have been directed to return to work beginning today,” officials from Marine Corps Logistics Base-Albany confirmed Monday that workers have been directed to return.

1. Plea entered, trial date set in federal fraud case

ALBANY — A guilty plea has been entered and a trial date has been set in connection with a federal fraud case, court officials said Monday. U.S. District Court records show that Brad Heard Jr., former owner of Backwoods Outdoors in Leesburg, has admitted to one charge of commission or gifts for procuring a loan. In December, Heard and three others were indicted in connection with loan fraud allegations.
