Board of Regents approves termination of 15 ASU academic degree programs

Regents say cutting low-producing programs will allow for academic realignment

ALBANY — The Georgia Board of Regents late Wednesday morning approved the termination of 15 academic degree programs at Albany State University. ASU President Art Dunning had recommended the terminations, citing numbers of low-producing programs.

The programs are:

• Associate of Applied Science in Psychiatric Technology;

• Associate of Science in Cancer Registry Management;

• Associate of Science in Cardiovascular Technology;

• Associate of Science in Human Services Technology;

• Associate of Science in Polysomnographic Technology;

• Bachelor of Arts with a major in Spanish Language and Literature;

• Bachelor of Arts with a major in Art;

• Bachelor of Arts with a major in Music;

• Bachelor of Music Education;

• Bachelor of Science with a major in Teaching Field — Health & Physical Education;

• Bachelor of Science with a major in Teaching Field — Science;

• Master of Education with a major in Teaching Field — Music;

• Master of Education with a major in Teaching Field — English;

• Master of Education with a major in Teaching Field — Mathematics; and

• Master of Education with a major in Teaching Field — Health & Physical Education.

Meanwhile, the university announced the route of its 2017 Homecoming parade, which will be held Saturday morning. The parade will begin at Davis Street and travel east down Pine Avenue before ending at Washington Street. The parade is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Saturday.

In other homecoming events, former ASU student-athlete and Grammy-nominated recording artist Rick Ross will headline a Student Appreciation Concert at 8 p.m. Thursday in the university’s HPER gym. General admission for the show is $30. Doors open at 7:30 p.m.

Ross, who performed during homecoming activities in 2010, also is owner of several Wingstop franchises and the Maybach Music Group record label. In addition to his homecoming performance, Ross will participate in a discussion on domestic violence in recognition of October as part of Domestic Violence Prevention month.

The Homecoming Convocation is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday in the HPER gym. Speakers will be two ASU alumni: William R. Shepherd, a longtime educator and leader of contemporary inner-city school reform, and Shareka L. Nelson, Facebook’s diversity business partner for its Global Marketing Solutions teams.

A community pep rally and social will be conducted 8 p.m.-midnight Friday on the 100 block of Pine Avenue in downtown Albany. The event, in partnership with the city of Albany, will feature the ASU cheerleaders, the Marching Rams Show Band and food.

Also, at 8 p.m. Friday, a Homecoming step show is planned in the HPER Gym. General admission is $20. Doors open at 7:30 p.m.

After Saturday’s parade, festivities will culminate with the Rams’ homecoming football game at 2 p.m. against the Morehouse College Tigers.
