Camilla woman charged with assault on police officer
Staff Reports
ALBANY — Demetra Denise “Dee” Butler, wanted for hitting a police officer with an auto during a Feb. 2 traffic stop, was arrested on March 7, officials with the Albany Police Department said Monday.
Officials said Monday that Butler, 29, of Camilla, was in the Dougherty County Jail, where she has been charged with aggravated assault on a la enforcement officer while on duty and parole violation.
According to Phyllis Banks, spokesperson for APD, Albany Officer Brad Young was conducting a traffic stop in the 2300 block of Tompkins Avenue at 7:47 p.m. on Feb. 2 when the driver of the vehicle he had pulled over refused to comply with his verbal commands to place the car in park after she attempted to close the door and drive off.
Young attempted to keep the door from shutting and again ordered the driver to stop, Banks said. The driver instead drove away at a high rate of speed, striking Young with the driver-side mirror and knocking him to to the ground. Young sustained some abrasions to his arm, Banks said.
