ALBANY — Not long after returning from duty in Iraq, U.S. Navy veteran Larry Barfield knew something wasn’t right.

Racked with constant anxiety, plagued by nightmares every night, and struggling to acclimate to his civilian life, Barfield eventually sought help only to learn he was suffering from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), an all too common affliction affecting thousands of service men and women returning home after serving their countries.

Barfield says he was originally told that the PTSD would pass in time and and his life would get back to normal, but that turned out not to be the case.
