CARDEN SUMMERS: State Senate passes significant legislation

The 2024 Legislative Session is well under way, and we have already passed numerous pieces of impactful legislation out of the Senate.
I enjoyed re-immersing myself in committee meetings and Senate chamber proceedings this week. Included in those proceedings was a considerable measure, which reaffirms our support of Georgia’s Jewish community. This week, the Senate emerged with a significant legislative and moral victory when we passed a bill defining anti-Semitism, also known as House Bill 30.
I will always support legislation that further ensures anti-Semitism is never wielded as a force for evil. As I reflected on the three-year legislative process this piece of legislation endured, I thought about the challenges we faced as legislators. Similarly, I thought about the challenges that my friends in the Jewish community have been forced to grapple with. The horrific acts perpetrated by foreign and domestic agents alike have brought a sense of renewed urgency to this matter. I’m proud to have voted in the affirmative on this legislation, and I want to thank Gov. Brian Kemp for signing HB 30 into law this past week.
Furthermore, I was proud to introduce Senate Bill 348 this past week. SB 348 would ensure fair competition in public sports by maintaining separate teams based on biological sex, protecting women’s sports from potential disadvantages, preserving the safety and privacy of individuals and upholding traditional values that have made our state and sports successful and prosperous. This bill has been assigned to the Senate Committee on Education and Youth, and I look forward to presenting the measure before the committee.
Week five of the legislative session will surely bring additional opportunities to discuss meaningful legislation both in committee and on the Senate floor. I am confident that our Republican-held legislature will continue to deliver. As always, the interests of the 13th Senate district are at the forefront of my mind. There is still much work to do, and I appreciate any feedback you have concerning current or future legislation.
