ALBANY — The Chehaw Park Authority has voted to pull out of the Artesian Alliance, determining that remaining with the group is “not in the best interest of Chehaw Park & Zoo.”

The Artesian Alliance has, for the last several years, been in charge of the collaborative operations of Chehaw, the Thronateeska Heritage Center and the Flint RiverQuarium, saving funding by combining some of the attractions’ services.

Chehaw Park Authority Chairman Tom Seegmueller made the announcement Thursday in a news release that read:”The citizens of Albany and southwest Georgia are fortunate to have Chehaw Park & Zoo, the Flint RiverQuarium and the Thronateeska Heritage Center as outstanding recreational and educational assets for residents and visitors to enjoy. The Artesian Alliance provided opportunities for these institutions to work together to promote services and encourage more people to support the member organizations and take advantage of the unique programs and amenities each provides.

“We appreciate our collaboration with the Alliance, but after careful consideration, the Chehaw Park Authority has determined it is not in the best interest of Chehaw Park & Zoo to remain a member of the Artesian Alliance. As we continue our national search for a new executive director to lead us into the future, we believe now is the right time to focus intently on improving Chehaw and ensuring future generations continue to enjoy this gem of southwest Georgia.

“Chehaw will honor all current Artesian Alliance memberships until they expire, and we will
consider partnering on joint memberships in the future. We thank the many people in our
community who visit Chehaw and support our mission. We look forward to exciting
announcements about enhancements to our facilities and services, and we hope to see you at the park soon.”
