COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Georgia Tech falls to Notre Dame in overtime

SOUTH BEND — Jerian Grant scored 24 points and dished out six assists to help No. 14 Notre Dame turn back an upset bid by visiting Georgia Tech as the Fighting Irish survived, 83-76, in double overtime on Saturday afternoon in Atlantic Coast Conference college basketball action.
All five Irish starters finished in double-figures, as Steve Vasturia scored 17 points, Zach Auguste scored 13 points, Demetrius Jackson scored 11 points and Pat Connaughton contributed 10 points and eight rebounds.
Marcus Georges-Hunt led Georgia Tech with 20 points. Charles Mitchell and Chris Bolden scored 14 points each for the Yellow Jackets.
Notre Dame, which had missed 11 consecutive shots from 3-point range late in the second half, opened the first overtime session with a 3-pointer from the corner by Jackson. Grant followed with a steal and slam for a five-point Irish lead.
After a jumper by Georgia Tech ‘s Bolden, Vasturia hit another 3 and the Irish owned a 67-61 lead with 3:00 left in overtime.
Georgia Tech got back in the game, as the Irish only hit 2-of-6 free throws in the first overtime, and the Yellow Jackets tied the score at 69-69 on a putback by Demarco Cox with :12 left in the first overtime. Grant missed a drive in the closing seconds, and a putback attempt by Auguste bounced off the rim as the buzzer sounded, bringing on a second overtime.
Notre Dame took a quick 5-0 lead in the second overtime on a jumper by Auguste and a 3-pointer by Connaugton. A lay-up in traffic by Auguste off a lob from Vasturia gave the Irish a 78-71 lead with 2:02 left, and the Irish were able to close out the win.
No. 2 DUKE 85, BOSTON COLLEGE 62: Freshman Jahlil Okafor scored a season-high 28 points in his first Atlantic Coast Conference game and Duke beat Boston College at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Guard Quinn Cook added 15 points, freshman forward Justise Winslow scored 13 and guard Rasheed Sulaimon had 11 as the Blue Devils (13-0, 1-0) ran their home-court winning streak to 41 games.
No. 3 VIRGINIA 89, MIAMI 80: The Virginia Cavaliers, who are unbeaten and off to their best start in more than 30 years, outlasted the Miami Hurricanes in double overtime.
Point guard London Perrantes led Virginia (13-0) with a game-high 26 points and shooting guard Justin Anderson had 16 points, including some dramatics in the first overtime. Perrantes entered the game averaging just 3.1 points but made some big shots, especially in the final 2:07 of regulation. He sank 11 of 12 free throws and was 5 of 9 on 3-pointers.
SETON HALL 66, No. 6 VILLANOVA 61: Seton Hall knocked off its second consecutive ranked opponent at home as the Pirates upset previously undefeated and No. 6 Villanova.
Villanova (13-1, 1-1 Big East) was trying to set the a program record for consecutive wins to start a season, but Seton Hall (12-2, 2-0) had other ideas after a 59-50 defeat of No. 15 St. John’s on New Years’ Eve.
SOUTH CAROLINA 64, IOWA STATE 60: Sindarius Thornwell scored six of his 13 points in the final two minutes and added eight rebounds as the Gamecocks stunned the Cyclones in Brooklyn, N.Y.
Duane Notice led the way with 15 points and four assists for South Carolina (9-3), which picked up its seventh straight win. Tyrone Johnson added 13 points and seven rebounds as the Gamecocks piled up a 42-34 advantage on the glass.
No. 11 TEXAS 70, TEXAS TECH 61: Guard Javan Felix scored 15 points and forward Jonathan Holmes added 14 to lead Texas over Texas Tech in the Big 12 opener for both teams.
No. 12 MARYLAND 70, MINNESOTA 58: Guard Melo Trimble scored 20 points, forward Jake Layman added 12 and swingman Dez Wells had 12 as Maryland held off cold-shooting Minnesota.
BUTLER 73, No. 15 ST. JOHNS 69: Just a day after being named Butler ‘s head coach, Chris Holtmann posted his first victory after the Bulldogs turned back St. John’s at Carnesecca Arena.
Holtmann became Butler ‘s 23d men ‘s basketball head coach on Friday. He had been serving as interim head coach since October, when former head coach Brandon Miller requested and was granted a medical leave of absence.
The Bulldogs (11-4, 1-1 Big East) were led by guard Kellen Dunham ‘s 28 points. Forward Roosevelt Jones added 14 points.
No. 17 WEST VIRGINIA 78, TCU 67: Gary Browne had 16 points, all in the second half, in helping West Virginia send TCU to its first loss of the season in a Big 12 Conference opener.
Devin Williams had 12 points and seven rebounds, including two key second-half put-back baskets for West Virginia (13-1), which played without leading scorer Juwan Staten, the Big 12 preseason player of the year who sat out because of the flu.
No. 18 OKLAHOMA 73, No. 22 BAYLOR 63: Oklahoma guard Buddy Hield had his first double-double of the season in the Sooners’ Big 12 opener at Lloyd Noble Center.
Hield finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Forward TaShawn Thomas led the Sooners (10-3, 1-0 Big 12) with 24 points and guard Isaiah Cousins had 19. Hield and Cousins each hit four 3-pointers.
No. 20 OHIO STATE 77, ILLINOIS 61: Freshman guard D’Angelo Russell scored 22 points and keyed a second-half rally as Ohio State defeated Illinois.
The Buckeyes (12-3, 1-1 Big Ten) averted losing their first two conference games for the first time since the 2009-10 season.
No. 25 GEORGETOWN 76, CREIGHTON 61: Freshman Tre Campbell scored a career-high 13 points and the host Hoyas pulled away with a 20-8 second-half run.
Campbell, who came in averaging 1.8 points per game, went 3-of-4 from 3-point range and 5-of-7 overall from the field for Georgetown (9-4, 1-1 Big East), which outscored the Blue Jays (9-6, 0-2) 43-30 in the second half.
