CORDELE — A homicide investigation is under way in Crisp County, officials said Monday.

Crisp County Sheriff H.W. Hancock reported in a news release that at approximately 4:50 p.m. Sunday, a manager at Cracker Barrel Restaurant called authorities after she drove to an employee’s residence at 2106 South 10th St., Lot 37, in Cordele when Ashley Nicole Garry, 27, failed to report for work — which was out of character for her.

After arrival the manager noticed that the front door of the residence was ajar, and she called 911. Deputies responded for a welfare check at the location and entered the residence and found Garry deceased from a gunshot wound, the release said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Hancock requested assistance from Georgia Bureau of Investigation Office in Americus with processing the scene and investigating the crime. Crisp County Sheriff Office investigators and deputies along with GBI personnel reportedly worked throughout the night and into the day interviewing and following leads pertaining to Garry’s death.

An autopsy is scheduled for this morning at the crime lab in Macon, officials with the Crisp County Sheriff’s Office said.

Officials from the sheriff’s office also said deputies will be present in the coming days holding license checks to see if citizens may have seen or heard anything on Sunday. This is the first homicide in the unincorporated limits of Crisp County since 2009, law enforcement officials said.

Hancock is urging anyone who may have seen or heard anything out of the ordinary in the area to call the Crisp County Sheriff’s Office at (229) 276-2600 or the GBI (229) 931-2439.
