Daffodil Garden Club selects Yard of the Month
Staff Reports
ALBANY — A residence in the Springfield subdivision off Gillionville Road has been selected as the Yard of the Month for May by the Daffodil Garden Club.
Nell Masters the owner of the home at 4426 Woodcrest Drive that is being recognized with the club’s monthly award.
“The yard has brick-lined, sweeping flower beds that abound with many beautiful plants,” said Marideane Maxwell, chair of the club’s yard of the month selection committee. “”Knock-out roses greet you as you turn in the driveway. Stella D’Ora daylilies are in full bloom with lamb’s ear interspersed. The Viburnum (sno-ball) tree that was a mass of white blooms has just finsihed blooming.
“The yard is something to see and Nell is happy for you to drive by and look.”
Maxwell said Masters recently completed adding 80 bags of mulch to the flower beds, noting that if she had bought one more bag it would have equaled her age.
Masters has had to make some concessions. She can only prune tree limbs when family members aren’t aware that she’s gotten the ladder out again. She also has someone else do the edging work, Maxwell said.
When she moved to the home, Masters said she had a number of trees removed, adding the yard at the time “wasn’t much.”
“From the looks of the yard now,” Maxwell said, “I think she has accomplished all her goals. Drive by and you will be impressed with Nell Masters’ yard.”
The Daffodil Club recognizes a yard each month for its beauty. Maxwell said club members hope that others will see the yards of the month and be inspired to improve their homes, too.
Maxwell said the club members are always happy to accept nominations from the public for their monthly award. To submit a nomination, call (229) 436-6888.
The club meets at 2 p.m. the third Tuesday of each at the Federated Garden Center on Fifth Avenue.
