DAWSON – A Friday ribbon cutting for a new Dawson restaurant brought out a good crowd looking to have a taste of Southern cuisine, and the new venture offers even more for the city.

Southern Soul Eatery & Nightspot, which opened about two months ago, also is bringing live music and other activities, Cheryl Cannon, executive director of the Terrell County Chamber of Commerce and Terrell County Development Authority, said. Owner Teresa Clyde, who lives in Athens, recently hosted ballroom dancing at the 125 N. Main St. establishment.

“It’s a soul food kind of vibe,” Cannon said. “She’s really trying to open it up for more events. She’s trying to do more events. She’s going to do Bingo. She has some speed-dating coming up.”

Every few weeks the restaurant hosts TNT, an Atlanta-based six-piece band, Cannon said.

“There are two different sections in the restaurant,” she said. ‘Where you first come in, it’s the restaurant. Then through the employee door, there’s another area with a stage set up.”

Southern Soul serves up something new, with daily menu changes, Cannon said.

City officials, community leaders and food enthusiasts eager to savor the authentic flavors came out for the ribbon-cutting ceremony, according to the chamber.

Dawson and Terrell County have been on a roll lately with new businesses, including the opening of JC’s Wingz & Concessions and a Jack’s location.

In addition, several other restaurants are looking at opening, the former IGA building is being refurbished for a new grocery store and work is under way for a new microbrewery and pizzeria location, Cannon said. Other new businesses include a Subway restaurant, a truck stop and Glam Beauty.
