Debt negotiations a mere ‘reality show’

Apparently the House and Senate have taken a cue from the latest craze on television, reality shows. Those who study the government know that the “deal” on the debt ceiling was struck weeks, if not months, ago with both sides getting much of what they wanted, while keeping us, the taxpaying public, in the dark. All of this to prove to us that they deserve their jobs.

Many of us realize that the posturing and storming out of meetings are nothing more that theatrics, a little show, to prove that they have “our” best interest at heart. Good Grief, we have other more important things to be worried about than how the speaker or the president walked out on a meeting.

I watched over the weekend as first a deal was “near,” then lost, then “an agreement was imminent,” then the parties would be on television stating that “the other side” was hedging on the accord. Do they really think we are that stupid? Our own senator has been a major factor in the “Debt Ceiling Show” as a part of the “Gang of Six.”

Now I ask you, doesn’t that sound like a title of a reality show in itself?

Even this morning, Monday the 1st of August, the show continues, with the major actors continuing to play up the suspense by telling us they have “reached a deal” but they have to sell it to their parties, again playing out the script as written months ago. I told anyone who would listen, several weeks ago, that the agreement had been made, but the sides would play this up to the end, as they have.

They continue to play to our fears, “our debt will be downgraded,” “our individual house payment will rise,” “we will never be able to afford a new car,” and on and on.

It’s time for the politicians to start listening to us. It’s time for “We the People” to have our voices heard. They have very little interest in what we think, except on election day. We already have “term limits.” It’s called elections. Remember this new reality show next October, as we have the opportunity to practice one of the few opportunities to “throw out the bums.”
