ALBANY — Students at Deerfield-Windsor Lower School here will take part in the school’s all-day Patriot’s Day event from 8 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Thursday at the Exchange Club Fairgrounds at 810 South Westover Road.
The annual Patriot’s Day event allows fifth-graders to dress in full Colonial costume and spend the day in a colonial-style environment that includes academics, crafts, food, customs … even military training for the boys and serving tea and sewing for the girls. The event is the culmination of an all-subject curriculum fifth-graders at the school have been participating in called “Why America is Free.”
Utilizing a grant funded by the Albany Chapter of the Colonial Dames, Deerfield Lower School students have been learning about colonial history, including Patriot life, the Revolutionary War, and important people during these times. Students also have been learning about art, science, music, trades, and customs of our forefathers … among other aspects from that era. They will even get a visit from a local blacksmith.
