ALBANY —The exchanged hugs, they consoled each other and they shed tears.
This one was tough.
Augusta Prep overwhelmed the Deerfield-Windsor girls soccer team for the second time this year as they scored two early goals en route to a 6-0 victory Tuesday in the second round of the GISA state tournament at Darton State College , ending Deerfield-Windsor’s season.
In their first meeting on March 13, Augusta Prep handed Deerfield-Windsor a 5-2 loss, the Lady Knights’ only loss of the season until Tuesday.
DWS coach Ally Joslin said his squad was simply outclassed.
“We got beat by a better team,” Joslin said. “They (Augusta Prep) were committed. They were physical. They were quick, and we couldn’t handle it.”
From the beginning, Augusta Prep was the stronger team as they controlled the run-of-play throughout the game. The Lady Cavaliers’ first goal came early in the match when McKenna De Graaf scored on a header off a corner kick from Charlotte Rindt.
Then they doubled the lead a few minutes later when Banks Collier took a low-line shot which found the far corner of the net.
Augusta Prep struck for the third time when Jessica Powell scored with eight minutes left in the first half.
The Lady Knights were limited to just two shots-on-goal for the first half.
The Lady Cavaliers nearly had their fourth goal of the game with just over three minutes to go but Caroline Smith’s shot was saved by DWS goalkeeper Leslie Sosby.
Deerfield-Windsor worked hard to try and create offense in the second half, but couldn’t overcome the quicker and stronger Augusta Prep team. The Lady Cavaliers scored again when Smith slotted the ball past DWS back-up keeper Hannah Mills to give Augusta Prep a 4-0 lead.
The Lady Cavaliers finished the game with two more goals, including an own goal by a DWS defender. The Lady Knights finish the season at 16-2.
