ATLANTA — Gov. Nathan Deal says that the White House and FEMA have notified him that six South Georgia  counties, including Dougherty, have been approved for individual federal assistance for damage from Sunday’s storms and tornadoes.

Also approved were Cook, Berrien, Crisp, Turner and Wilcox.

On Wednesday, Deal got word that Dougherty had been approved for federal assistance for damage from the Jan. 2 storm system.

“I’m tremendously grateful for the immediate assistance and attention President trump has given Georgia’s requests for federal aid,” Deal said, “as well as his concern for our citizens.”

Deal also thanked Trump for sending the acting FEMA director to view the damage firsthand.

The governor said he is working to expedite federal help for the remaining 10 counties that he declared a state of emergency for in the aftermath of Saturday and Sunday’s storms. That list includes Dougherty neighbor Worth County.
