Dougherty Couny opens up board application process
As the city of Albany’s Utilities Authority transitions to full automation for reading utility meters, some customers have seen estimated bills instead of an actual bill in recent billing cycles, many resulting in extremely high bills.

ALBANY – Dougherty County is seeking applicants for a variety of boards that help the government run smoothly.
Although some of the boards meet irregularly or seldom, they provide community and professional input into the decisions made by the Dougherty County Commission..
Interested candidates should submit a letter of interest and/or a resume by 5 p.m. on March 29 to Bristeria Clark Hope, deputy county clerk, at [email protected].
The commission will make appointments to the following boards:
— Air Conditioning, Heating & Ventilation: One appointment to fill a one-year term ending Dec. 31. The purpose of the board is to review all HVAC matters. It meets on an as-needed basis. Applicants are required to live in Dougherty County.
— Albany-Dougherty Land Bank: One appointment to fill a two-year term ending July 31, 2026. The board’s purpose is to strategically acquire and dispose of property for the betterment of neighborhoods and the community as a whole. Applicants must have documented experience in subject matters relating to the operation of a land bank, including but not limited to: real estate, banking, property development, finance and/or accounting. The board meets each second Tuesday at 5 p.m. Contact Hope for an application.
— Aspire Behavioral Health and Developmental Disability Services: One appointment to fill a three-year unexpired term ending on June 30. The board’s purpose is to provide mental health, developmental disability and addictive diseases services to residents of an eight-county area. It meets every odd month and on an as-needed basis. Submission to the clerk’s office must state the disability area represented.
— Citizens Transportation Committee (DARTS): One appointment to fill a three-year unexpired term ending on Dec. 31, 2025, for the committee that is a nine-member citizen board for the city of Albany and Dougherty and Lee counties. The committee meets quarterly at 8:30 a.m.
— Department of Family & Children Services: Two appointments to fill four-year terms ending on June 30, 2029. The purpose of the committee is to develop and promote the general welfare, trade, commerce, industry and employment opportunities in the county, and meets on an as-needed basis.
— Electrical: Four appointments to fill one-year terms ending Dec. 31. The board considers matters related to electrical installations including alterations, repairs and equipment, and meets on an as-needed basis. One appointee must be a master electrician, two must be electrical suppliers and one must be a professional engineer. The board meets on an as-needed basis and applicants must be Dougherty County residents.
— Fire Code Board of Appeals: Three appointments to fill three-year unexpired term ending on Dec. 31, 2025. The board hears appeals and makes decisions regarding complaints of violations of the Joint Fire Code and meets on an as-needed basis.
— Floodplain Management Review: Two appointments to fill a three-year unexpired term ending on Dec. 31. The board considers variances in structures that are below the required base flood elevation levels and meets on an as-needed basis.
— Gas Board: One appointment for a one-year term ending on Dec. 31. The board considers all matters related to gas work, including alterations, repairs and equipment, and meets on an as-needed basis.
— Planning Commission: One appointment to fill a three-year unexpired term ending on Dec. 31, 2025. The commission recommends actions on zoning and special approval cases. It meets monthly at 2 p.m. on the first Thursday.
