MIAMI — Dustin Johnson overcame a five-shot deficit to win the World Golf Championships-Cadillac Championship by one stroke over J.B. Holmes at Trump National Doral in Miami on Sunday.
Johnson closed with a 3-under-par 69 on the TPC Blue Monster course to finish at 279. Holmes carded a final-round 75 and wound up at 280.
In his fifth event back on the PGA Tour since a self-imposed six-month sabbatical, Johnson earned his ninth career victory. He hadn’t won since capturing the WGC-HSBC Champions in Shanghai in November 2013.
Johnson was up and down in his first four tournaments after returning to action. He missed the cut at Torrey Pines, placed fourth at Pebble Beach, lost in a playoff at Los Angeles, then missed the cut last week in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
Holmes opened the door for Johnson by bogeying three of the first six holes. Johnson moved into a share of the lead with his third birdie of the day (against one bogey) at No. 10.
When Holmes made another bogey at No. 14, Johnson was on top by himself. Johnson stretched his advantage to two strokes with a birdie at the par-3 15th hole. Holmes got one stroke back with a birdie at No. 16, but both players made par on each of the final two holes.
Bubba Watson, who began play Sunday tied with Johnson for second place, finished in third at 281 after a closing 71.
Australia’s Adam Scott (final-round 71) and Sweden’s Henrik Stenson (final-round 72) tied for fourth at 284.
South Africa’s Louis Oosthuizen carded a 73 Sunday to take sixth place at 285.
Sharing seventh place at 286 were Webb Simpson (final-round 73) and Bill Haas (final-round 74). Ryan Moore (final-round 76), Kevin Na (final-round 71) and Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy (final-round 72) tied for ninth place at 287.
