LEESBURG — Reports indicated late Monday afternoon that a police officer from Leesburg had been involved in a fatal shooting during a confrontation which resulted in the death of a resident who lives inside Leesburg’s city limits.

Attempts to reach the Leesburg Police Department Monday resulted in The Albany Herald learning that there was a shooting, but city officials at city hall could not confirm any details.

Sources said the shooting may have happened as officers were following up on an incident which occurred during the weekend.

Deputy Chief Lewis Harris of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office said late Monday afternoon that the case was being handled by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation office in Americus, and agents from the GBI were not reachable as of press time on Monday.
