CUTHBERT — Randolph County’s Recreation Camp Road at Little Ichawaynochaway Creek reopened Wednesday with a new bridge that replaces one built in 1966.

The old bridge needed to be replaced due, in part, to cracking and spalling, which is the breakdown of concrete that causes it to break off in small pieces. It can be caused by weathering or other factors. The bridge closed in the summer of 2021 and through traffic was detoured off-site during construction. This shortens construction time and lowers costs because a detour bridge doesn’t have to be built on site.

Georgia Department of Transportation programs allow for replacement of bridges that aren’t on the state highway system, reducing the number of posted or deficient bridges on county roads. The old Recreation Camp Road bridge was posted for weight limits. Total cost of the project is $1.6 million, which includes preliminary engineering and construction.
