DAWSON — Animal and margarita lovers have an opportunity to unite Tuesday during the first Meows, Mutts & Margaritas fundraiser planned to benefit the Humane Society of Terrell County.
The Cinco de Mayo celebration, which will be held at Austin’s Firegrill & Oyster Bar at 2817 Old Dawson Road, will feature adoptable dogs on site from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and an opportunity to buy unique T-shirts marking the event. Funds from the T-shirt sales will benefit the Humane Society.
“Austin’s was just great; we went to them with the idea of having an event like the one we had on Valentine’s Day that was really successful,” HSTC volunteer Krissy Waller said. “But (owner) Austin (Newman) said we shouldn’t just be there through lunch, we were welcome to stay all day. And he said he’d like to make it an annual event.”
The restaurant is also donating 10 percent of all sales for the day to the Terrell Humane Society.
Waller said the Humane Society of Terrell County gets no government funding and all of its workers are, like her, volunteers.
“There’s a group of us that just loves animals,” she said. “We do all we can for the owner-surrender and rescue animals, make sure they get a medical exam and are taught social skills.
“Our biggest need is for people to provide foster homes for a couple of weeks while we try to find homes for the pets or for individuals to adopt the animals and give them what we call a ‘fur-ever’ home. We don’t have a shelter to house the animals, and we are a no-kill facility. We’re keeping our fingers crossed, hoping in the next couple of years that we’ll get funding for a shelter.”
Meows, Mutts & Margaritas T-shirts will be on sale during the Cinco de Mayo celebration. Single shirts are $15, while a pair may be purchased for $25. Door prizes will be handed out during the event.
