JULIE WELLS: Turkey sliders small in size, but also big in flavor

In case some of you have put away the grill for the season, you’ll be happy to know that today’s featured recipe, turkey sliders, can easily be prepared on the stovetop.

Though some people use their grills year round, for our busy little family, making these lean turkey burgers on the stovetop is very convenient.

Unlike most of the recipes in the Recipe Box column, this happens to be one of those in which we just threw some ingredients together to see what we would get.

I’ve struggled with getting beef hamburger patties to stick together and not fall completely apart in the skillet. I’ve tried using eggs and breadcrumbs to hold my beef patties together, but to no avail.

But I had fantastic luck when I mixed up two eggs, taco seasoning, a little shredded cheese, some steak sauce and 1 pound of ground turkey with my bear hands.

My husband made some flat bread from coconut flour and eggs to use as the rolls. But feel free place these turkey sliders on King’s Hawaiian rolls.

We topped our turkey sliders with the traditional toppings of slices of cheddar jack cheese, lettuce, tomato, and the usual condiments.

I’m not sure if it was the taco seasoning or the added steak sauce that helped enhance the flavor of the sliders, but they were delicious.

One last thing. I chose to run this recipe today in honor of my husband. This is one of those meals during which we worked very well together in the kitchen. I’ll be the first to admit, when I’m cooking, I want the whole kitchen to myself. But with this meal, I mixed up the meat and got the toppings ready, and he made the bread and cooked the sliders. It all just seemed so harmonious in the kitchen when we made this meal together.

With that said, today is his birthday, so Happy Birthday Kevin.
