LEESBURG _ Lee County Commissioners met for almost four hours Tuesday night, with half of that time spent behind closed doors on a personnel matter.

The Commission handled a variety of routine matters before adjourning to the closed session at 7:56 p.m. County Manager Ron Rabun was in the closed meeting for about an hour before leaving the room, which left commission members and County Attorney Jimmy Skipper conferring for another hour.

Commissioners exited the closed meeting at 9:45 p.m., returned to the meeting room and immediately adjourned without comment.

Before the private meeting, Commissioners voted to go against the wishes of its Planning Commission and planning staff members on a couple of zoning variances.

One variance will allow Thorsin Development Inc. to have city water on a 100-acre tract at 460 Fussell Road as part of a plan to develop a 49-lot subdivision. The variance was sought to allow Thorsin to develop the subdivision without curb and gutter. Lee Planning Commission previously voted 4-2 for the variance, while staff members recommended denial based on existing ordinances. Preliminary plans call for a gated community with 49 lots of about two acres each. The vote was 4-1 with Commission Vice Chairman Dennis Roland opposing.

Also going against the wishes of the Planning Commission, county commissioners granted a variance to Mike Roberts to create a lot to be accessed by way of an easement instead of abutting a public road as required by ordinance.

The 4.9 acre tract is in a split zoning district with highway frontage zoned C-2 and the remainder of the tract zoned R-3. The property is located at 830 U.S. Highway South. Before the unanimous vote, Skipper discussed the possibility of setting a precedent since there are 278 other split zoned lots in Lee County.

The commission also appointed Winston Oxford, Jack Miller and Greg Crowder to the Lee County Joint Development Authority Board.

Jenny Crisp, Kenneth Greene and Ben Roberts were appointed to the Lee County Animal Board and Lee Johnston was appointed to the Lee County Community Foundation Board of Trustees.
