Lee County has all-star triple play

KANSAS CITY — Buster Posey, Luke Bryan and Phillip Phillips will be on the national stage on the same night Tuesday at Major League Baseball’s 83rd All-Star Game.

Posey, San Francisco Giants catcher and a National League Rookie of the Year, will be the starting catcher for the NL team. He tallied more than 7.6 million votes from fans — setting a new NL record — to earn the spot at the annual summer classic, which will be at at Kauffman Stadium, home of the Kansas City Royals. Posey is hitting .295 with 10 homers and 43 RBI.

Before the first pitch is thrown, however, reigning “American Idol” champion Phillips will perform “Home” on the field and a tribute will play during the song highlighting tornado recovery efforts in Joplin, Mo., and Tuscaloosa, Ala., the Washington Post reported.

Meanwhile, Bryan, who recently won for male video of the year at the 2012 CMT Music Awards for “I Don’t Want This Night to End,” is set to sing the national anthem at the game.

“We are hoping something will be said for them all being from Leesburg,” Lisa Davis, vice president and marking director for the Lee County Chamber of Commerce, said Thursday. “We’ve been talking about how great it would be having all three of them together here.”

When Davis was asked as to the probability that the trio would be coming into Leesburg together, she said that — because of commitments the three individuals have — such an event was not likely to happen anytime soon.

Also during the game, country artist Kellie Pickler is expected to perform “God Bless America.”

The game will air on Fox 31 beginning at 8 p.m. Tuesday. Pregame ceremonies start at 7:30 p.m.
