COLUMBUS — The Darton Aqua Darts swimming team brought nine area club swimmers to the 2011 Groundhog Invitational in Columbus this past weekend, where nine-year-old Hector Grimaldo stole the show.

Grimaldo won five races and was second only once by one-hundredth of a second. He was the 9-10 boys overall high point winner for the meet.

Eight-year-old Andrea Alvizures took home 11th place in the overall point standings for the 7-8 girls.

The team of Broc Fretwell, McKenzie Fretwell, Aubrey Garrett, Kyle Pendleton, Chloe Usry, Dorian Usry, Kassidy Usry, Alvizures and Grimaldo may have been small in numbers compared to the other teams at the Invitational, but they definitely made their presence known. Every swimmer recorded a personal best time in every single race they swam.

“Our 9 and 10 girls and boys — Aubrey, Chloe, Kassidy, McKenzie, and Broc — were dropping 10 seconds in a lot of their events. It was awesome!” first-year head coach Will Breehl said. “Kyle and Dorian did very well in their first meet as 11 year olds, and dropped tons of time. They didn’t seem fazed about the older competition.”

The next meet for the Aqua Darts is the 2011 Georgia Short Course State Championships on Feb. 25-27 in Savannah.
