Andrew lecture tackles Native American culture
CUTHBERT — November is National Native American Heritage Month. In recognition of Native American cultures, and before the Thanksgiving holiday, Jason Huddleston, an English professor at Andrew College, wants others to be more keenly aware of the long and often dishonorable history of what he calls the media’s misrepresentation of Native Americans.
Huddleston will discuss the various ways media — from film and television to advertising and toys — caricature and disparage Native Americans, and how he says such inaccurate and insensitive depictions have led to not only more authentic understandings but also more appropriate media representations of Native American cultures.
The lecture, entitled “Redfacing: Media and the Stereotyping of Native American Cultures,” will be held on the Andrew College campus in Jones Chapel on Nov. 15, at 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
For more information on this event, call or email Huddleston at [email protected]; (229) 732-5981.
