ALBANY — The weekend “Cops at Doughnut Shops” fundraiser in Albany raised $14,336.90 for Special Olympics Georgia this year with the help of local law enforcement agencies.

Law enforcement agencies from the Albany area teamed up with Special Olympics athletes at the Krispy Kreme location on North Slappey Boulevard April 27-28 for the Law Enforcement Torch Run event as a means to help raise funds for the Special Olympics.

Last year, Cops at Doughnut Shops raised more than $17,000 for the Special Olympics. Including other fundraising events, the Dougherty County Sheriff’s Office ranked third statewide in Special Olympics donations for the Law Enforcement Torch Run in 2017.

“Once again, the southwest Georgia community rallied around this event and showed their generosity by supporting this wonderful cause,” Marie Ostrander, Special Olympics fundraising chair for Dougherty County, said. “Special Olympics is an integral part of our community and positively affects the lives of many of our citizens. The money raised will enable Special Olympics athletes to participate in statewide competitions.”

No Special Olympics athletes pay to participate in the games. Fundraisers like Cops at Doughnut Shops provide the funds for registration, board, food, travel and athletic equipment.
