ALBANY — Carlton Fletcher has been promoted to the position of managing editor of The Albany Herald, and Brad McEwen has been promoted to digital editor for the newspaper, Herald Editor Jim Hendricks announced.

The promotions came following the retirement of former Managing Editor Danny Carter, who spent nearly 30 of his 45 years in journalism serving in various capacities with The Herald.

“You never want to lose someone like Danny. He’s a great person and a great journalist, a consummate professional,” Hendricks said. “But I’m also happy to be able to promote two quality individuals like Carlton and Brad to bigger roles in the news department.”

As managing editor, Fletcher will be the No. 2 editor in the newsroom. He will be involved in assignments, editing and daily production of the paper.

“Carlton’s coverage of local government is unsurpassed, and he has a strong grasp of local issues,” Hendricks said. “His knowledge and experience will be invaluable as we move forward.”

Fletcher, an Albany State University graduate, rejoined The Herald staff in 2006 as metro editor and has been responsible for the newspaper’s local government coverage. Previously, he had served in several capacities with the newspaper, including news editor, features editor, staff writer and sports writer.

McEwen will head up The Herald’s digital news efforts, while also being involved in assignments, editing and daily production.

“Getting news quickly to our readers on their smartphones, tablets and other electronic devices is an important part of our work in the digital information age,” Hendricks said. “I believe Brad is the right person to help us to continue advancing in that critical area.”

McEwen joined The Herald in September 2013 as a general assignment staff writer focusing on business news. Before coming to The Herald, the University of Georgia graduate was a branch manager and area consumer sales manager with Regions Bank in Albany, and was a staff writer with the Toccoa Record in north Georgia.
