Albany State University awarded $650,000 grant for STEM scholarships

ALBANY — U.S. Rep. Sanford D. Bishop Jr., D-Albany, announced Friday that the National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded Albany State University a $649,926 grant for the Cohort Community for Academic Achievement Persistence and Perseverance in STEM Scholars Program, increasing the number of students who major in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) disciplines at Albany State University and go on to successfully pursue STEM post-graduate education or research careers.

“I applaud the National Science Foundation for providing talented Albany State University students a wonderful opportunity to grow through science, technology, engineering, math, and research, opening doors to graduate school and innovative jobs in the STEM workforce” Bishop said.

During the project, 18 scholars will develop and follow a four-year academic and professional plan that will include freshman learning community courses, workshops, service learning, and field trips or visitations under the guidance of a Student Success Coach, participate in at least one undergraduate research experience, and attend and present an undergraduate research project at an on-campus or regional conference.

After graduation these scholars are expected to join the STEM workforce or go on to graduate school in STEM.

“The STEM disciplines place students on the cutting edge of new and emerging careers. We are delighted to be a leader in this area across the country. Lastly, I am excited when our scholars and researchers are recognized for their work,” said ASU President Art Dunning.

ASU Associate Provost for Research and Sponsored Programs, and Dean of the Graduate School Louis Wrenford was delighted with the grant.

“I am excited, this will give us an opportunity to support students who are academically talented in STEM disciplines but need financial help in completing their degrees,” Wrenford said.
