ALBANY – Nineteen students from Albany Technical College and their advisors competed in the SkillsUSA State Conference Thursday-Saturday in Atlanta. Winning students will continue on to compete in national competition later in the year.

The majority of the technical colleges have SkillsUSA chapters. Membership in SkillsUSA affords students the opportunity to demonstrate occupational and leadership skills by competing in state and national competitions. SkillsUSA state competitions are held annually in the spring, and the national competitions are held in June. At the regional level SkillsUSA Championships, more than 5,200 students compete in 91 occupational and leadership areas. At the state level, approximately 500 students compete in about 64 occupational and leadership contests.

SkillsUSA is a United States career and technical student organization serving more than 300,000 middle school, high school, and college students and professional members enrolled in training programs in trade, technical and skilled service occupations, including health occupations. The organization is dedicated to preparing America’s high-performance workers in public career and technical programs.

SkillsUSA provides quality education experiences for students in leadership, teamwork, citizenship and character development. It builds and reinforces self-confidence, work attitudes and communications skills. It emphasizes total quality at work — high ethical standards, superior work skills, life-long education, and pride in the dignity of work.
