ALBANY — Officials with the Albany Technical College Move On When Ready program will hold an informational session for eighth-grade students and their parents at 6 p.m. today in the Kirkland Conference Center.
The purpose of the session will be to encourage parents of eighth-graders to begin considering the Move On When Ready program early and prior to students’ start to their high school years.
The program was passed into legislation in Georgia in 2009 as a dual enrollment opportunity for students to attend a post-secondary institution. Participating students receive high school credit and college credit simultaneously while attending college classes on the college campus, full-time.
The informational session this evening will kick off with a welcome and presentation by Albany Tech President Anthony Parker, followed by a presentation on the Commodore Conyers College and Career Academy by Tanjula Petty, vice president for Academic Affairs at Albany Tech, and Chris Hatcher, CEO of the career academy.
A presentation entitled “The MOWR Experience” will be given by MOWR students Jamekia Collins of Monroe Comprehensive High School, Nilkumar Patel of Terrell County High School, and Sara Rowan, the parent of an MOWR student.
Superintendent Butch Mosely will also present on behalf of the Dougherty County School System. Admissions and enrollment information will be presented by Cassandra Oliver, MOWR high school coordinator at Albany Tech. Michelle Lilly-Williams, director of Albany Tech’s Engineering Preparatory Academy, will present on offerings provided by the academy.
Currently, Albany Tech’s MOWR enrollment is 390 students. Parker said he anticipates the program growing to at least 500 students in the fall.
