Albany to host Fair Housing Month events; celebrate 50th anniversary of Fair Housing Act

ALBANY — The city of Albany and its partners have recognized the month of April as Fair Housing Month and will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Fair Housing Act of 1968. The city has planned events to commemorate Fair Housing Month as well as the anniversary.
The theme this year is “The Fair Housing Act: 50 Years of Opening Doors.” The city will take advantage of the anniversary to advertise and highlight the provisions of the act and educate the public on both their rights and how to file a complaint if they believe they have been discriminated against.
The launch will take place on Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Albany Housing Authority’s 521 Pine Ave. location. Training on the Fair Housing Act for members of the industry and consumers will take place on April 19 at 10 a.m. at the MicroBusiness Enterprise Building at 230 South Jackson St. The month’s signature event will take place on April 26 at 6:30 p.m. and will be hosted by the Albany Civil Rights Institute.
The initial launch will consist of remarks from representatives of the city of Albany and The Albany Housing Authority. Information will be distributed to participants, and an eight-minute film, “Seven Days,” will be shown. The film describes the days between the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. and the signing of the Fair Housing Law by President Lyndon Johnson.
The signature event will be hosted by the ACRI with a keynote address by attorney Joy Lampley-Fortson, executive director and administrator of the Georgia Commission on Equal Opportunity in Atlanta. A person who has made recognizable efforts to uphold fair housing in Albany will be honored during the event.
Through the Albany Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma, students in Dougherty County will be recognized for participating in a creative expression competition through the writing of essays and poetry as well as the designing of posters that capture the national theme. Their works will be displayed in the lobby of the ACRI and other venues in the city.

Albany Commission hits pause on data centers for study, drafting regulations
The Albany City Commission compromised between six months and 18 months to set a moratorium of 12 months on permitting data centers in the city. The resolution approved in a unanimous vote allows for a six-month extension.
