ALBANY — New leadership has been selected for the American Red Cross Southwest Georgia Youth Board, officials from the Red Cross announced Wednesday.

The new officers include:

— President: Porter Hill, Deerfield-Windsor School

— Vice President: Bethany Brubaker, Westover Comprehensive High School

— Secretary: Rebecca Hughes, Deerfield Windsor

— Treasurer: Anna Johnson, Deerfield Windsor

The students are set to serve as board leaders for a one-year term. The Red Cross Southwest Georgia Youth Board “provides youth with opportunities for training, leadership development, and the ability to choose Red Cross mission-related activities that address a community’s greatest needs.”

The Youth Board trains members in disaster relief and preparation. In the case of the Red Cross needing a shelter, the members are expected to have the training to help volunteer behind the scenes, and in the case of a disaster, the members will be equipped with the training for mass food distribution and emergency supplies.

“The Youth Board is a way to bring our youth a sense of community and what our community needs. We teach them about shelters, fire safety, smoke alarm installation, serving with law enforcement, blood donation drives and more,” Red Cross Southwest Georgia Executive Director Andy Brubaker said.

Brubaker also said that the program gives youth a chance to connect with their community so that if they “go away to college,” they might be enticed to return to serve the community with the skills the members learned during the program.
