ALBANY — AmeriCorps has been among the agencies contributing to the storm relief effort in the Albany area, and the team the organization sent is no stranger to disaster recovery.

A team with the National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC), an AmeriCorps program, was deployed to Dougherty County after a tornado hit the area on Jan. 22. The team, Delta 1, consists of nine members and has been in Albany for five weeks doing an array of tasks to serve the area in any way possible, officials with AmeriCorps said.

AmeriCorps officials said that Delta 1 has recently been working with the relief effort by helping manage and arrange a donations distribution warehouse, which typically receives hundreds of donations a day ranging from personal hygiene items to home repair materials.

So far, the team has had the opportunity to help with security, keep the warehouse organized and unload and load donations from various nonprofits while doing hundreds of property assessments.

AmeriCorps officials said that, since arriving in Albany, the team has helped the relief effort by supplying donations to 47 organizations and about 14,400 individuals. The warehouse has also distributed more than 25,900 bottles of water and 100,000 pounds of food.

“Working with Albany Relief and Recovery has been an incredible experience. Helping out this community has been very worthwhile, and I hope we can continue to help out this area in any way we can,” said team member Lindsey Ganey.

The team was recently at the SOWEGA Council on Aging helping clean that agency’s community garden, which benefits the senior citizens it serves, to prepare for the growing season while most of the Council on Aging’s usual volunteers were focusing on relief efforts elsewhere.

The Delta 1 NCCC team is based out of Vicksburg, Miss., but consists of members from around the country. The team also went to Louisiana and West Virginia last year to assist in relief and recovery after flooding in both states.

After completing their work in Albany, team members are expected to travel back to Vicksburg for several days before deploying to their next project.
