LEESBURG — Liberty House, a non-profit serving Southwest Georgians impacted by domestic abuse, will be conducting its annual fundraiser — Pearls and Possibilities — on Saturday.
This year marks the fourth annual event, which starts at 6 p.m. at the Bindery at Oakland Library in Leesburg. The theme — “New York, New York!” — will be reflected in the decor, which is expected to include the Statue of Liberty, said Silke Deeley, executive director of Liberty House.
Cocktail hour will be until 7:30 p.m. There will be dinner and dancing to live entertainment from disc jockey Billy Ocean, and Covenant Presbyterian Church music minister and Lee County Elementary School music teacher Chet Dreschel. There will be a live and silent auction to raise funds for Liberty House, and state Rep. Ed Rynders, R-Leesburg, is expected to make an appearance, Deeley said.
The auction items are anticipated to include a five-person dove hunt in Argentina, a 2003 Ford Focus, gift baskets from Thirteenth Colony Distilleries and Still Pond Vineyard and Winery, jewelry, pictures, a wheelbarrow filled with party items, a home security system from Central Monitoring, a deer hunt for two and a set of nursery items.
Tickets are $60, which includes the dinner and dancing. The goal is to raise $25,000, which goes toward matching dollars to qualify for grants — allowing the funds to pay for overhead and community services.
“We started several years ago, and it takes time to build the event up,” Deeley said. “We have 10 business sponsors.”
Since January, more than 110 people have been served through the Liberty House shelter. In all, services have been provided to 1,030 people since the beginning of the year. Men, woman and children have been served by the shelter, which has 20 beds, the executive director said.
“This is our only annual fundraiser and only big fundraiser, so it is important to raise as much money as possible during this time,” she said. “Without this, we can’t provide the service that are so needed.”
Aside from private donations, funding for Liberty House comes from United Way of Southwest Georgia, and state and federal grants, Deeley said.
The dinner is being provided by Dollie Dollar Catering. Due to the needed head count, those who do not purchase tickets in advance are asked to reserve their tickets ahead of time to be picked up at the door.
Tickets can be purchased through Liberty House, Love Letters at 2726 Ledo Road or Custom Interiors in Leesburg.
